It’s been an exciting summer here in Chicago and at Garrett Popcorn. Not only did we head to the Taste of Chicago again to offer our delicious Popcornsicle, but we’ve had a major motion picture filmed right in our very own city for the past few weeks. Yes, Transformers 3 has been taking over Michigan Avenue and Wacker Drive. The Garrett Popcorn offices had a great view during the creation of the Hollywood film. All of the staged debris and occasional explosions were a little distracting but we managed to keep popping!

We had a front row seat and plenty of popcorn! Everyone knows that movies and popcorn go hand in hand. However the history of popcorn and movies hasn’t gone without some bumps in the road. Did you know that when big movie houses were built in the early 1900s many owners banned all ‘snack’ foods? They feared that their venues and films were too upscale for snacks, as snacking was associated with less refined entertainment, like vaudeville. It wasn’t until after the Great Depression, when movie theaters offered a more casual atmosphere, that they decided to include the sale of snacks (the most popular of which quickly became popcorn).

Today, movies and popcorn are a match made in heaven. Not only can you still get popcorn at the theater, but we also have the modern luxury of watching movies in our own homes, on our own terms, with our own choice of popcorn. Garrett Popcorn Shops has been a movie night favorite for decades. And why not? When you sit down to a movie that stimulates your imagination and briefly takes you away from reality, only the best, gourmet popcorn will do.
