My Mexican ShivahGarrett Popcorn will be at Calumet Park (located at 9801 S. Ave. G) tonight before sunset to hand out bags of The Chicago Mix to movie goers.

The Latino Cultural Center will be showing Morirse está en Hebreo (My Mexican Shivah). The passing of a Mexican Jew whose appetite for life was stronger than his spiritual discipline makes for a difficult set of funeral arrangements in this comedy from filmmaker Alejandro Springall. Moishe (Sergio Klainer) was a happy-go-lucky guy living in Mexico City’s Jewish quarter until the day he died — appropriately enough while dancing at a party for a local Hebrew theater troupe. While Moishe was a man with plenty of friends, most of the folks he left behind to arrange his funeral don’t have much good to say for him.

Anita

Garrett Popcorn is joining forces with Chicago’s Latino Cultural Center for an outdoor screening of the 2009 Argentinian film, Anita. Anita is the story of a young woman with Down syndrome who lives a happy, routine life in Buenos Aires, being meticulously cared for by her mother Dora. One tragic morning in 1994, everything changes when Anita is left alone, confused and helpless after the nearby Argentine Israelite Mutual Association is bombed (the deadliest bombing in Argentina’s history). As Anita wanders through the city, she learns not only to care for herself, but touches the lives of those around her, from an alcoholic to a family of Asian immigrants.

The movie will play at sunset on Wednesday, July 13 at Harrison Park, 1824 South Wood Street. Garrett Popcorn will hand out free bags of popcorn to movie-goers while supplies last.

Hope to see you there!
