How many of you have rented a movie, popped yourself some popcorn and enjoyed it with a glass of wine?

Don’t be shy; you’re in good company here. I will gladly admit that one of my favorite indulgences on a Friday night is a good movie, popcorn and a glass of wine. Wine and popcorn, you ask (you should know by now that Garrett Popcorn is not just popcorn it is a little taste of heaven)?  Oh yes, and I would like to take you on a happy journey to popcorn and wine nirvana.  Follow me.

For many years the idea of food and wine pairing conjured up visions of fancy restaurants, wine stewards and intimidating wine lists.  That idea has been tossed out the window in the past decade; wine has become friendlier, more approachable and just plain fun (and what is more fun than popcorn?)!

In 2009 I hosted a ‘Garrett Popcorn and Wine Pairing’ class at Lynfred Winery. I cannot begin to tell you of the enthusiasm from the winery patrons upon the announcement. The event was sold out in one hour and one of the most frequent questions I get from customers is, ‘When are you going to host another popcorn and wine pairing?’ It is from this excitement that I have decided to teach you, the popcorn and wine fanatic, how to host your own pairing party (whether it’s ten of your closest friends or just you, your fuzzy slippers and the remote). So, without further adieu, here are my favorite wines paired with Garrett’s Popcorn:

CaramelCrisp®:  Try with a Brut (this is dry) style Champagne or Sparkling wine. If you aren’t into the bubbles try a somewhat oaky Chardonnay. Red wine drinker? The CaramelCrisp® would be awesome with a Syrah! For the sweet tooth: nibble the CaramelCrisp® while sipping on a cordial of Ice Wine!

Macadamia CaramelCrisp®: Would be positively divine with an Extra-Dry Sparkling wine or Champagne, a Chardonnay or a Late Harvest Riesling.

CheeseCorn™: My absolute favorite pairing in our recent popcorn and wine pairing session was the Cheddar CheeseCorn™ and Merlot! I know, I know, you let the movie ‘Sideways’ skew your logical brain from drinking Merlot but I promise you, Merlot is back, baby!

Pecan CaramelCrisp®: If you would like to experience popcorn and wine bliss I will share a secret with you; Pecan CaramelCrisp® and Ice Wine. You’ll thank me.

Buttery and Semillon; enough said. If you cannot find a Semillon (it is a white Bordeaux grape that is often blended with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle) I recommend a Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc or even a Pinot Grigio. If you are a fan of red wines I think you would love it with a Grenache or Malbec.

Plain: Where do I begin? Garrett’s Plain popcorn is so wine friendly it is hard to decide. I recommend a Sauvignon Blanc for white wine drinkers and a Cabernet Sauvignon for red wine drinkers.

The Chicago Mix:  This blend of Garrett’s delish-ness calls for a group of friends and a mélange of fabulous wines! Might I also recommend a comedy for the movie?
